Liberty Star
by Kim Diehl
After falling in love with a sampler quilt in the late 1990s, Kim impulsively purchased the pattern, taught herself the steps needed to make it and realized she was completely smitten with quiltmaking. With just her third quilt, she became the winner of American Patchwork & Quilting magazine's 1998 Pieces of the Past quilt challenge, turning her life down an unexpected path as her new-found hobby blossomed into a full-time career. Kim's favorite quilts include traditionally-inspired patchwork designs, especially when combined with appliqué. She loves stitching her projects using modern techniques for an ideal blend of simplicity, ease and charm. The popularity of Kim's quiltmaking methods and her "Simple" series of books with Martingale & Co. led to an extensive teaching schedule for several years, until she retired from travel in 2015. Spending her days at home once again has given Kim time for all of the things she loves most -- designing and stitching, gardening, cooking, antiquing and most especially, grandbabies! -
Mary Jane was born and raised just a few miles from downtown Los Angeles. But every summer her family would take a LONG road trip to rural Wisconsin to visit her Norwegian relatives. This was where her heart would soar. Cousins, cousins and more cousins, aunts, uncles and grandparents galore. Spending time with her grandfather on his 113 acre dairy farm and feeling the baby lambs with bottles was heaven. Of course her grandparents spoke very little English but she soon learned one very important word: lefse. It's a a traditional soft Norwegian flatbread and something she still enjoys to this day. Moving from California to Western Massachusetts brought her back to her roots–a small rural setting. She always says she didn't choose to be born in Los Angeles and she always asked to stay in Wisconsin when vacation was drawing to an end. Mary Jane comes from a long line of quilters. She was named after her great-grandmother who sold quilts during the depression to make ends meet. She has been designing fabric for Henry Glass since 2012 and enjoys each and every day of it. She currently has been designing popular lines of Nordic-inspired fabrics. She now operates as both Holly Hill Quilt Designs and also The Nordic Quilter..
